Actis invests $49m in Egyptian food business Mo’men

Mo’men operates a chain of restaurants under the brand names Mo’men, Pizza King and Planet Africa. The company also produces frozen foods and ready meals under the ‘Three Chefs’ brand.

Sherif Elkholy, Actis investment principal in Cairo, said, ‘Given the changing population demographics and the increasing wealth of the middle classes, the company has a clear opportunity to expand to meet this demand. In Mohammed Mo’men, the company has a charismatic and skilled leader and Actis is delighted to be partnering with him and his two brothers to accompany the business in the next stage of its development.’

In Egypt, Actis has previously invested in food company El-Rashidi El-Mizan, which it exited in 2007. The firm is also currently invested in marble producer and exporter Sinai Holding International, in which Actis invested in 2007.

Earlier this month Actis, alongside Emerging Capital Partners, exited its investment in Nigerian mobile telecommunications operator Starcomms.
